British Emigrants From New York To York, Upper
Canada 1817
This list names groups of British men and women
who left New York for York, present day
Toronto. For the year 1817 alone, records were kept of those “British emigrants
in New York who wished to relocate in His Majesty’s Colonies in the Canadas or
Nova Scotia” by order of the British Consul. Consequently, passes were issued to
each family and details of these have been preserved and are held at the
Archives of Ontario in Toronto.
Each pass contains information about the family,
including their place of origin in England, the number of family members, the
head of the family and his trade. On the reverse of each pass the information
was repeated, often with slight variations or additions – essential to the
family historian.
Many names are marked with an asterisk indicating
a footnote must be consulted.
