Guisborough Primitive Methodist Circuit Register Of Baptisms 1850 - 1903Cleveland County Records Office Ref Number R/M/RSG/3/2/1
Methodist baptism registers can be difficult to use, particularly Primitive Methodist ones which were often indifferently kept. This register is no exception. The entries are not arranged in any recognizable order, many of them clearly have been entered two or three years after the event and are mixed with later baptisms. As a consequence some entries have been duplicated and, without doubt, others have been missed.
This is a Circuit register and includes baptisms for Boosbeck, Brotton, Charlton, Coatham, Dunsdale, Guisborough, Hutton, Kildale, Lingdale, Marske, Moorsholm, Margrove Park, Mount Pleasant, New Marske, North Skelton, Redcar, Saltburn, Skelton, Skelton Green, Skelton Shaft, Slapewath and Stanghow as well as a number of minor communities and some strays.
The Index is an abbreviated transcript of all the valid entries in the register placed in alphabetical order.
In general the entries have been transcribed as written including fairly obvious variant spellings of names. Some standardisation of place names has been adopted. Where blanks or omissions occur in the register these have been replaced by ….
This index should be used as a finding aid only. Refer back to the original register which contains more information including, in most cases, the date of birth.
I acknowledge, with gratitude, the help and encouragement of the staff of Teesside Archives Department in preparing this volume.
